Metronidazole is an antibacterial against anaerobic organisms, amoebicide and antiprotozoal. It is the drug
of choice for first episodes of mild-to-moderate Clostridium difficile infection.
Giardia lamblia and ameba are intestinal parasites that can cause abdominal pain and diarrhea in infected
individuals. Trichomonas is a vaginal parasite that causes inflammation of the vagina (vaginitis). Metronidazole
selectively blocks some of the functions within the bacterial cells and the parasites resulting in their death.
The FDA approval of Metronidazole vaginal gel 1.3% was based on a phase III randomized, double-blind, placebo-
controlled, multicenter clinical trial. Metronidazole 1.3% was compared to MetroGel-Vagina (metronidazole
vaginal gel 0.75%). Results showed that the higher concentration Metronidazole 1.3% was well tolerated and efficacious.
